Sinisa Karan Win in Republika Srpska Presidential Snap Election

(MENAFN) Sinisa Karan, widely regarded as a close confidant and designated successor of former president Milorad Dodik, who was removed from office due to his separatist actions, secured victory in the snap presidential elections in Republika Srpska, the Serb-majority region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to preliminary results released on Sunday.

Polling commenced at 7 am local time (0600GMT) and ended at 7 pm (1800GMT) across 2,211 voting stations within Republika Srpska and abroad.

Bosnia’s Central Election Commission (CIK) reported that 443,472 of the over 1.2 million eligible voters cast their ballots.

Jovan Kalaba, President of CIK, stated that early figures indicate Karan, who currently serves as the minister of scientific and technological development and higher education and previously held the post of interior minister in the Republika Srpska government, is leading the contest.

Karan is supported by Dodik’s Alliance of Independent Social Democrats party.

With 92% of votes tallied, Karan secured 50.89% of the vote, while Branko Blanusa of the Serbian Democratic Party received 47.81%.

In numbers, this translates to 200,116 votes for Karan and 188,010 for Blanusa, according to Kalaba.

Acknowledging the outcome, Dodik congratulated Karan on his win, while remarking on the low voter participation.

Upon declaring his success, Karan emphasized that Republika Srpska “posed no threat to anyone,” adding: “We will continue from where we left off, with greater strength.”
